Homemade Turmeric soap recipe

I recently posted pictures of the homemade soap I whipped together with the help of few friends, on facebook.

Since several of you asked for the recipe, I figured it would make a good blog post.

Here is my recipe:

  • One portion of Lye
  • 2 portions of tap water
  • 8 portions of oil
  • 1 spoon of turmeric
  • Essential oil for aroma (optional)

Online recipes call for “Distilled water”. However, I just used regular tap water. If you are unsure of the quality of the water, distilled water is certainly a good option.

As far as oil goes, I used olive oil. Here are other suggestions for oil.

  • Oil used for frying. Instead of throwing them out, save them and filter and use.
  • Olive oil
  • Neem oil
  • Coconut oil (liquid one)
  • Or whatever you have handy

Two other things you would need are:

  • Hand blender.
  • Soap mold.

As far as the procedure goes, I followed the video below.

Lye is a chemical.

But No lye, no soap. It’s a chemical process that combines the ingredients to form soap . Properly made, there is no lye left at the end of the saponification process.

This is a super easy soap. If you want to get fancy, you can add shea butter, goat milk and any kind of essential oil to come up with tons of combinations.

Experiment and let me know what turns out to be your favorite combination.

PS: After making the soap, wait for 6-weeks before using. They need to cure.

Caution: Do follow the safety instructions explained in the video while handling Lye.
